Today I went to the Print Festival at Leeds Art Gallery (in Munro House). I liked it, but think I was more taken with the Totes Amaze! exhibition I went to yesterday (Mirfield, WYPW). This one was mostly digital prints, rather than hand screen printed. I’m not denying the value of digital print, but digital prints could belong in any number of exhibitions, I expected it to be a display of hand printed skill. However, it was still really interesting with some great work and if you want to visit yourself it will be on until 27th of this month. There’s also an excellent art shop in Munro house called Colours May Vary.
Also found at the Lightbox in the shop.
“hand printed metal jewellery and sculpture
michael abbott + kim ellwood
We work together in our studio workshop overlooking the hills to the ocean just outside St Ives in Cornwall. The light here on the north coast is always magical, the sea a bright turquoise and the landscape’s always wild.
Hand printed figurative brooches, with themes including the garden and the sea, are made to wear, display and hopefully to bring a smile! Our one-off hand printed metal sculptures explore narrative themes loosely drawn… individual characters emerge through the process of making, using images printed onto metal and found objects to tell a new story.”
